Jagannath Temple Puri Timings 2026: Darshan Hours, Entry Rules, Mahaprasad and Rath Yatra

Last verified: September 2026. Daily timings shift around rituals and change substantially for Rath Yatra and Snana Purnima — confirm locally or on the temple’s official site before you travel.

Puri is one of the four Char Dhams, and the Jagannath Temple is unusual in almost every way: wooden deities that are replaced every 12–19 years, a kitchen that cooks for tens of thousands without anyone tasting the food, a flag on the 65-metre tower that is changed by hand every single day, and an entry rule that stops a large share of visitors at the gate. Here is everything you need before you go.

Temple Timings

The temple is open roughly 5:00 AM to 11:00 PM every day, but darshan is not continuous — it pauses whenever the deities are offered food or dressed. The rituals below are the usual order; times move by 30–60 minutes depending on the day.

RitualApprox. timeDarshan?
Dwara Phita (doors open), Mangala Aarti5:00 – 5:30 AMYes, after aarti
Mailam, Abakash (bathing of deities)6:00 – 6:30 AMPaused
Sahanamela (free public darshan close to the deities)7:00 – 8:00 AMYes — best window
Gopal Ballav bhog, Sakala Dhupa (morning meal)8:00 – 10:00 AMPaused
Madhyanha Dhupa (midday meal)11:00 AM – 1:00 PMPaused
Afternoon darshanRoughly 1:00 – 5:00 PMYes
Sandhya Aarti, Sandhya Dhupa6:00 – 8:00 PMPaused during dhupa
Chandana Lagi, Badasinghara Besha (night dressing)9:00 – 10:30 PMYes, then paused
Pahuda (doors close)Around 11:00 PM—

Sahanamela (7–8 AM) is the one to aim for: devotees are allowed right up to the sanctum, free, and it’s the quietest close darshan of the day.

The Entry Rule

Only Hindus are admitted inside the main temple complex. This is enforced at all four gates and has been upheld for centuries; no ticket or letter changes it.

If you cannot enter:

  • Raghunandan Library rooftop, directly opposite the Singhadwara (Lion Gate) on Grand Road, has a clear view of the temple tower and the Neelachakra. Small donation expected.
  • Rath Yatra: for nine days each year the deities are outside on chariots on Grand Road, and anyone can see them and join the pulling.

What You Can’t Take In

Mobile phones, cameras, leather (belts, wallets, bags), umbrellas. Free and paid lockers at the Singhadwara, but leaving everything at your hotel is faster. Security in 2026 is stricter than before, with prohibited-item boards at every gate. Dress modestly: dhoti or trousers for men, saree or salwar suit for women; shorts are refused.

Mahaprasad and Anand Bazar

The temple kitchen cooks 56 dishes daily in earthen pots stacked over wood fires. Once offered, it becomes Mahaprasad and is sold at Anand Bazar inside the complex, usually from about 2 PM. Sit on the ground, eat from leaf plates alongside everyone else — it is considered the single most important thing to do here after darshan. Rice, dal, khechudi, dalma and khaja (the dry sweet you take home). Buy only inside the temple; the Mahaprasad sold outside is not the same.

Rath Yatra

Held on Ashadha Shukla Dwitiya (late June or July). In 2026 it fell on 16 July, with Bahuda (return) on 24 July and Suna Besha (gold attire) on 25 July. The 2027 date will be set by the temple’s almanac — expect early July. For 15 days before Rath Yatra (Anasara) the temple is closed to darshan while the deities “recover” from Snana Purnima. Rooms in Puri sell out 4–6 weeks ahead; Bhubaneswar is the fallback.

How to Reach

  • Air: Bhubaneswar (Biju Patnaik) Airport, 60 km, 1.5 hours by road.
  • Rail: Puri station, 2 km from the temple; direct trains from Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Ahmedabad.
  • Road: Bhubaneswar 60 km, Konark 35 km. OSRTC and private buses hourly from Bhubaneswar.

Where to Stay

Grand Road and the area near Swargadwar (the beach side) are walkable to the temple; the beach hotels on Chakratirtha Road and Marine Drive are 10–15 minutes by auto. Odisha Tourism (OTDC) runs Panthanivas near the beach. For Rath Yatra week book months ahead.

Nearby

  • Gundicha Temple (3 km) — the deities’ Rath Yatra destination; open all year.
  • Konark Sun Temple (35 km) — UNESCO site, half a day.
  • Chilika Lake, Satapada (50 km) — dolphins and boat rides.
  • Puri beach and Swargadwar — sunrise walk; the sea is rough, swim only in marked areas.

Best Time to Visit

October to February. Summer is hot and humid; July–August is Rath Yatra crowds and monsoon. Kartik Purnima (November) and Snana Purnima (June) are the other big days.
