Tirumala receives somewhere between 60,000 and over a lakh pilgrims on an ordinary day. That single number explains everything about the darshan system: why there are so many ticket types, why free darshan can take most of a day, and why the ₹300 tickets vanish within minutes of release. This guide lays out every option so you can pick the one that fits your dates, budget and patience — and book it before it’s gone.
Temple Timings
The Sri Venkateswara Temple is open almost round the clock. It closes only for a short cleaning window in the early hours. The day is built around sevas rather than an “opening time”, so what matters is which queue you are in and when your slot is.

Timings shift on Fridays (Abhishekam), during Brahmotsavam, and on festival days. On peak days the free queue effectively runs 24 hours.

The two most people actually use are the ₹300 Special Entry and the free SSD token. Everything else depends on connections, fitness or luck.
How to Book the ₹300 Special Entry Darshan
- Create an account at ttdevasthanams.ap.gov.in or on the TTD “Govinda” app. Use a mobile number you’ll have with you — the OTP and e-ticket go there.
- Watch the quota release calendar. TTD releases the whole month’s Special Entry tickets in one go, usually around the 20th–25th of the month two months before (so October tickets release in late August). The exact date is announced on the portal a few days ahead.
- On release day be logged in before 10 AM IST. Tickets for weekends and holidays sell out in minutes; weekday slots last longer.
- Pick your date and hourly slot. You’ll enter names, ages and Aadhaar numbers for everyone in the group (maximum 6 per booking).
- Pay. The ticket includes darshan plus two small laddus per person; you can add more laddus at the time of booking for a small extra charge.
- On the day, report at the ATC Car Parking area in Tirumala at least 30 minutes before your slot with printed or e-ticket and original ID. Late arrivals are turned away.
Tip: if your slot is 10 AM, 11 AM, 5 PM or 6 PM, TTD often offers a 12-hour room in Nandakam guest house bundled with the booking for about ₹350. Take it — Tirumala rooms are otherwise very hard to get.
Free SSD Tokens: The Option Most People Don’t Know
If you didn’t get a ₹300 ticket, don’t just join the free queue. Go to the SSD (Sarva Darshan Slotted) counters in Tirupati town first. They issue free time-slotted tokens for the next day — you show up at your slot instead of standing 15 hours. Counters open early morning and tokens for the day run out by late morning, so reach by 5–6 AM. Everyone in your group must be present with Aadhaar.
Dress Code — Strictly Enforced
Men: dhoti/pancha with shirt or kurta. Women: saree, or salwar-kameez with dupatta. Jeans, shorts, sleeveless and T-shirts are refused at the entrance for all paid and slotted darshans. This is enforced, not advisory. Dhotis are sold everywhere in Tirumala if you forget.
What You Can’t Take In
Mobile phones, cameras, bags, belts, electronics. Free lockers are available at the queue complex, but the queue for lockers itself takes time — leave everything in your room or vehicle if you can.
The Laddu
Every darshan includes laddu — the ₹300 ticket gives two; free darshan pilgrims get one token for a subsidised laddu. Extra laddus are sold at the laddu counters near the exit at around ₹50 each with a per-person limit. Queues are long after evening darshan; the counters near Kalyana Katta are usually quicker.
Tirumala vs Tirupati: Where to Stay
Tirumala (the hilltop, where the temple is) — TTD guest houses (PACs, Nandakam, Sri Padmavathi, Varahaswami rest houses). Book on the same TTD portal; released on the same schedule as darshan tickets and gone as fast. Rooms are ₹100–₹1,500. Free dormitory-style halls exist if you have nothing.
Tirupati (the town below, ~22 km) — far more hotels at every price, plus TTD’s Vishnu Nivasam and Srinivasam complexes near the railway station. Most families stay here and go up by bus.
How to Reach
- Air: Tirupati Airport (Renigunta), 15 km from Tirupati town. Flights from Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai.
- Rail: Tirupati Junction — well connected across South India and to Mumbai, Delhi via Renigunta.
- Road: Chennai 135 km (3 hours), Bengaluru 250 km (5 hours), Hyderabad 550 km.
- Tirupati to Tirumala: APSRTC buses every few minutes from the bus stand, about 45 minutes up the ghat road. Taxis and own vehicles also allowed; two-wheelers only until evening. Or walk — Alipiri steps take 3–4 hours and qualify you for Divya Darshan.
Best Time to Visit
Weekdays outside school holidays are the only way to get a relaxed darshan. Avoid: weekends, Fridays (extra sevas shorten public darshan), Vaikunta Ekadasi (December/January), Brahmotsavam (September/October), New Year week, and April–June summer holidays. Weather-wise, October to February is comfortable; summers are hot but Tirumala’s altitude helps.
