Kamakhya Temple Timings 2026: Darshan Hours, ₹501 Special Darshan Booking and Ambubachi Rules
Last verified: September 2026. The Kamakhya Devalaya Management Committee changed its ticketing in June 2026 — much of what’s online is now out of date. Confirm on the official Assam portal before you travel.
Kamakhya sits on Nilachal Hill above Guwahati and is counted among the oldest of the 51 Shakti Peethas. There is no idol: the goddess is worshipped as a natural stone cleft in a cave sanctum, kept wet by an underground spring. That cave is what the queue is for, and on a weekend the queue is four to five hours long. This guide covers the timings, the one paid option that actually exists, and the rules that catch first-time visitors out.

Doors shut at 5:30 PM sharp. Anyone still in the queue is turned back. Weekday mornings from 5:30 AM are the calmest window; by 8 AM the line is already long.

Special Darshan slots run within the morning and afternoon sessions. Book 3–7 days ahead for weekends; weekday slots are usually available a day out. Carry the e-ticket and the ID you booked with; names are checked.
Touts: the temple has publicly warned that several apps and websites sell “guaranteed VIP” passes and unsanctioned pujas. Only the official portal is valid.

- Go to prasang.assam.gov.in and register with your mobile number.
- Select Maa Kamakhya Devalaya → Special Darshan.
- Choose date and slot, enter each person’s name and ID number.
- Pay ₹501 per person online.
- Download the e-ticket. Reach the Special Darshan gate 30 minutes before the slot.
Ambubachi Mela: The Rule That Surprises Everyone
Every June the sanctum closes for three days for the goddess’s symbolic menstrual seclusion and reopens on the fourth morning with purification rituals. In 2026 it ran 22–26 June; the 2027 dates will be announced on the temple’s official site (maakamakhya.org) and usually fall in the same week.
During Ambubachi: no darshan on the closed days, the outer complex stays open, and Special Darshan is suspended entirely — everyone, including ticket holders, uses the general queue on reopening day, when waits run 6–12 hours. Lakhs of pilgrims and sadhus come for this. If you want a calm darshan, avoid the whole week. If you want the reopening, arrive in Guwahati the evening before and book your hotel months ahead.
Rules Inside
- No photography inside the sanctum. Phones are allowed in the outer complex.
- No leather — belts, wallets, bags are stopped at the entry.
- Modest dress: saree, salwar-kameez, kurta, trousers. Shorts and sleeveless are refused.
- Footwear at the paid counter near the entrance.
- Animal sacrifice is part of the tradition here and happens in a designated area; it can be confronting if you’re not expecting it.
- Prasad: red cloth (angavastra) and vermilion are the customary offerings; the temple’s own counters are inside.
Other Temples on Nilachal Hill
Ten Mahavidya shrines surround the main temple. Bhuvaneshwari at the summit has the best view of the Brahmaputra and stays open when the main sanctum is closed. Most pilgrims also visit Umananda (on an island in the river, boat from Uzan Bazar), Navagraha and Basistha in the city.
How to Reach
- Air: Guwahati (LGBI) Airport, about 20 km. Direct flights from Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad.
- Rail: Kamakhya Junction, 3 km from the hill base; Guwahati station, 7 km. Both are major stops on the Northeast line.
- To the temple: Taxi or auto from the city to the hilltop, ₹150–₹300. Or shared vehicles to the base and a 15–25 minute climb up the steps.
Where to Stay
Paltan Bazar and Fancy Bazar near Guwahati station have the widest range of budget hotels. The temple committee runs a few guest houses on the hill; ask at the office. For Ambubachi, book anywhere in the city 3–4 months ahead.
Best Time to Visit
October to March. Summer is humid and monsoon (June–September) brings heavy rain and the Ambubachi crowds. Durga Puja (October) and Navratri are busy but manageable. Tuesdays and Saturdays are traditionally the goddess’s days and draw more locals.
