Rameshwaram Temple Timings 2026: Darshan Hours, 22 Theertham Ritual, Spatika Lingam, Dress Code and Dhanushkodi
Last verified: September 2026. The temple is run by Tamil Nadu’s HR&CE department; timings and ticket rates are posted at the gates and change for festivals. Confirm on arrival.
Rameshwaram is the only place that is both a Jyotirlinga and one of the four Char Dhams, and it has a ritual sequence unlike any other temple in India: a dip in the sea, then twenty-two wells inside the temple where attendants pour water over you from buckets, then darshan of the linga that Rama is said to have installed before crossing to Lanka. The sequence, the afternoon closure and the dress code catch most first-timers out. This guide gives the order, the times and the costs.
Ramanathaswamy Temple Timings
| Event | Time |
|---|---|
| Temple opens | 5:00 AM |
| Spatika (crystal) Lingam darshan | 5:00 – 6:00 AM (ticket; queue from 4 AM) |
| Morning darshan | 5:00 AM – 1:00 PM |
| 22 Theertham (wells) | 5:00 AM – 12:30 PM and 3:00 – 5:30 PM approx. |
| Afternoon closure | 1:00 – 3:00 PM |
| Evening darshan | 3:00 – 9:00 PM |
| Evening poojas | Around 5:00 – 6:30 PM |
The 1–3 PM closure is the one to plan around: arrive by 9 AM at the latest to finish sea dip, wells and darshan before it.
The Ritual Sequence
- Agni Theertham — the beach in front of the east gate. A dip (or at least a sprinkle) in the sea before entering. Free.
- 22 Theerthams — buy the ₹25 ticket at the north gate counter and join the escorted group. Attendants draw water from each of the 22 wells and pour it over you; the water in each tastes different and the wells are numbered. 45 minutes on a quiet day, up to 2 hours on weekends. You will be soaked — wear clothes you can get wet in.
- Change — lockers and changing rooms near the wells exit; dry, traditional clothes are required for the sanctum.
- Main darshan — Ramanathaswamy (the linga) and Parvathavardhini (the goddess).
The wells are not compulsory, but most pilgrims consider the visit incomplete without them.

Dress Code and Rules
Strictly enforced: dhoti or trousers with shirt for men; saree, half-saree or salwar-kameez for women. No jeans, shorts, sleeveless, leggings. No phones or cameras anywhere in the temple; paid counters outside. Non-Hindus may walk the corridors but not enter the sanctums.
The Corridors
The outer corridor is about 1.2 km around, with roughly 1,200 pillars, and is usually described as the longest temple corridor in the world. Walk it after darshan when the crowd thins; the third prakaram, with its painted ceiling, is the finest.
Around Rameshwaram
- Dhanushkodi (18–20 km) — the town destroyed in the 1964 cyclone, at the tip of the island where the Ram Setu shoals begin. The road now runs to Arichal Munai, the land’s end. Go after the afternoon closure; it’s 2–3 hours round trip. No shade, carry water.
- Pamban Bridge — the rail bridge (a new vertical-lift bridge opened in 2025) is best seen from the road bridge beside it.
- Gandhamadhana Parvatham (3 km) — a small shrine with what is held to be Rama’s footprint; the highest point on the island, with the view.
- Kothandaramaswamy Temple (12 km) — where Vibhishana is said to have surrendered to Rama.
- APJ Abdul Kalam Memorial (2 km) — the former President’s memorial in his home town.
- Panchamukhi Hanuman Temple — with floating stones said to be from the Setu.

Where to Stay
Lodges and dharamshalas within walking distance of the temple; the HR&CE department runs a large guest complex. Mid-range hotels along the beach road. Book ahead for Mahashivratri and Thai Amavasai.
Best Time to Visit
October to March. April–June is very hot and humid; monsoon here is October–December (north-east monsoon), so November can be wet but cool. Mahashivratri (February/March), Thai Amavasai (January/February) and Adi Amavasai (July/August) bring the biggest crowds — the last two for ancestral rites at the sea.
