Mahakaleshwar Bhasma Aarti Booking 2026: Timings, ₹200 Ticket, Release Dates, Dress Code and Darshan Guide

Last verified: September 2026. Booking rules, prices and quotas are set by the Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple Management Committee and change during Shravan and festivals — confirm on shrimahakaleshwar.com before you travel.

Bhasma Aarti is the reason most people go to Ujjain. It happens once a day, before dawn, and only here: the Jyotirlinga is bathed, dressed and then offered sacred ash while the temple fills with drums, conches and a chant that doesn’t stop for ninety minutes. Around 1,500 to 2,000 people get in each morning; on a Shravan Monday lakhs want to. The online quota disappears within minutes of opening, which is why this guide starts with the booking calendar and not the history.

Bhasma Aarti Timings

EventTime
Entry for ticket holders1:00 AM – 3:00 AM (gate closes when the aarti starts)
Bhasma Aarti4:00 AM – 5:30 AM approx.
Regular temple darshan4:00 AM – 11:00 PM
Other daily aartisNaivedya ~7:30 AM, Bhog ~10:30 AM, Sandhya ~7:00 PM, Shayan ~10:30 PM

Timings shift slightly with sunrise and on festival days. Once the aarti begins, nobody is admitted — arrive by 3 AM at the latest.

How to Book Online (the only reliable way)

  1. Go to shrimahakaleshwar.com — the official site. Create an account with your mobile number and email.
  2. Note the release date. Slots for a whole month open on the 1st of the previous month at 8:00 AM (so November opens on 1 October). Dates around Mahashivratri and Shravan sometimes open on a separately announced date — the site posts a notice a few days ahead.
  3. Be logged in before 8 AM on release day. Pick your date, enter every member’s name, age, gender and ID number (Aadhaar or passport), and upload a photo of each person.
  4. Pay ₹200 per person online. The e-pass arrives by email and in your account.
  5. Print it. Carry the original ID for every person. Names are checked at the gate; a mismatch means no entry.

A limited number of tickets are also sold offline the day before at the temple’s counter (near the Harsiddhi gate side), but the queue for those forms before dawn and it is not something to plan around.

Agents and “guaranteed” websites: many sites use the words “Mahakal booking” in their name. Only shrimahakaleshwar.com is official. Agents resell the same ₹200 passes, if they have them at all, for ₹1,500–₹5,000.

Dress Code — Enforced at the Gate

  • Men: dhoti (unstitched) with or without an angavastra, bare chest or a kurta. No trousers, shorts or T-shirts.
  • Women: saree. Salwar-kameez is refused at the Bhasma Aarti gate.
  • Dhotis and sarees are rented and sold from stalls on the temple approach from midnight; ₹100–₹300.
  • No phones, cameras, bags, belts or leather. Free lockers at the entry; the queue for them takes 15–20 minutes, so leave everything at your hotel.

What Happens Inside

You are seated in the Nandi hall or the galleries facing the sanctum. First the abhishek — water, milk, curd, honey, ghee, sugar — then the linga is dried and dressed. Then the bhasma: ash (today prepared from cow-dung cakes with mantras) is offered by a priest who is himself in a single dhoti. The drums and damru rise, the conches sound, and the aarti runs until the sanctum is closed for the deity’s rest. Women traditionally look away or cover their eyes at the moment of the bhasma offering; you will be told when.

Sit early to get a line of sight. Nobody may leave once it begins.

Other Darshan Options

OptionCostNotes
General darshanFree1–3 hours weekdays; 4–6 hours Mondays and Shravan
Shighra Darshan (fast queue)₹250Ticket at the counter or online; 30–60 minutes
Garbhagriha (sanctum) entryAround ₹750 per person, limited windowsDirect sanctum darshan, dhoti/saree only; often suspended in peak periods
Special poojas (Rudrabhishek etc.)₹1,000 upwardsBook through the temple office

Where to Stay

Stay within walking distance of the temple — you’ll be leaving your room at 1 AM. Mahakal Lok’s opening turned the surrounding streets into a hotel strip: budget lodges to mid-range hotels within 500 m. The temple committee runs dharamshalas; book on the same portal. Indore (55 km) has more choice but makes the 1 AM start painful.

How to Reach Ujjain

  • Air: Indore Airport, 55 km, 1–1.5 hours by taxi (₹1,200–₹1,800).
  • Rail: Ujjain Junction, 2 km from the temple; direct trains from Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Bhopal.
  • Road: Indore 55 km, Bhopal 190 km, Ahmedabad 400 km (7–8 hours).

Combine With

  • Mahakal Lok corridor — the 900-metre illuminated approach, best after sunset.
  • Harsiddhi Temple (Shakti Peeth, 10 minutes’ walk) and Kal Bhairav (3 km, where liquor is offered).
  • Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga — 140 km, 3 hours; a comfortable day trip or overnight. Two Jyotirlingas in one trip is why most pilgrims come.
  • Ram Ghat on the Shipra for the evening aarti.

Best Time

October to March for weather. For a manageable Bhasma Aarti, avoid Shravan (July–August), Mahashivratri and its week, Nag Panchami, and New Year. A Tuesday to Thursday in winter is the realistic sweet spot.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is the Bhasma Aarti ticket?

₹200 per person, online at shrimahakaleshwar.com.

When do bookings open?

Usually the 1st of the previous month at 8 AM, for the whole following month. Festival periods may be released separately.

What time should I reach?

Between 1 AM and 3 AM. The gate closes when the aarti starts at about 4 AM.

Is the dress code really enforced?

Yes. Dhoti for men, saree for women. Rentals are available outside.

Can children attend?

Yes, with a ticket each and in traditional dress. Be honest with yourself about a 1 AM start.

Can I watch it without a ticket?

Not inside. The temple live-streams it; a few hotels nearby show the stream. There is no “standing” quota.

Is Omkareshwar doable the same day?

Yes — leave Ujjain after the aarti, reach Omkareshwar by 10 AM, back by evening. Verified against the temple committee’s booking notices and recent devotee reports, September 2026. Spotted a change? Email info@themandiryatra.com.
