Omkareshwar Temple Timings 2026: Darshan Hours, ₹300 Shighra Darshan, Mamleshwar, the 7 km Parikrama and How to Reach

Last verified: September 2026. Timings are set by the Omkareshwar Temple Trust and change on Mondays, in Shravan and on Mahashivratri; guides disagree on whether darshan pauses in the afternoon, so plan for the morning or post-4 PM session to be safe. Confirm at the temple office.

Omkareshwar is the Jyotirlinga on an island. The Narmada splits around Mandhata Hill so that, seen from above, the land forms the syllable Om — which is the name, the legend and the reason the whole pilgrimage is organised around crossing the river and walking around it. The temple is small, the darshan is quick, and the day is really about the parikrama, the boat, and the second temple across the water that many pilgrims don’t know they’re supposed to visit. This guide puts the pieces in order.

Omkareshwar Temple Timings

EventTime
Temple opens, Mangala Aarti5:00 AM
Morning darshan5:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Bhog / midday (short pause; some sources list a closure to 4 PM)12:00 – 4:00 PM
Evening darshan4:00 PM – 9:30 PM
Shayan Aarti, temple closesAround 8:30 – 9:30 PM

Mamleshwar (see below) keeps similar hours: 5 AM–12 PM and 4–9 PM.

Two Temples, One Jyotirlinga

The Jyotirlinga is counted as one but worshipped at two shrines, and the tradition is that darshan is complete only after both:

  • Omkareshwar (Omkar Mandhata) — on the island, up a flight of steps from the ghat. The main shrine; the linga sits in a natural cavity and is bathed in water continuously.
  • Mamleshwar (Amareshwar) — on the south bank, a hundred metres from the bridge. Older, quieter, a protected monument with Sanskrit inscriptions on the walls; many locals hold this to be the original.

Do Omkareshwar first (the crowd builds on the island by mid-morning), then cross back for Mamleshwar.

Darshan Options

OptionCostNotes
General darshanFree30–60 minutes on weekdays; 2–4 hours Mondays, weekends, Shravan
Shighra (fast) darshan₹300 per personTicket at the counter or on the district’s portal (omkareshwar.nic.in); separate line
Abhishek / Rudrabhishek₹500 upwardsBook at the temple office with the trust’s priests
Special sevas (Shravan, Mahashivratri)Announced by the trust—

No phones, cameras or bags in the sanctum; lockers at the entrance. Modest dress. Monkeys on the island steps are bold — hold onto prasad and glasses.

The Parikrama (7 km)

The circumambulation of the island is the heart of the visit. It starts at the island ghat, climbs the hill past the Siddhanath and Gauri Somnath temples, drops to the sangam of the Narmada and Kaveri (a small tributary, not the southern river) at the eastern tip, and returns along the north shore through ashrams and ghats. Paved throughout, 2–3 hours at pilgrim pace. Start by 6 AM in summer; it’s exposed and hot after 10.

Crossing the River

Two bridges connect the island to the town — a pedestrian suspension bridge and a newer road bridge — so walking across is free and takes five minutes. The boat ride (₹30–₹50 shared, ₹300–₹500 private) is still worth it: the only way to see the island’s Om shape is from the water, and the boats stop at Kotitirth Ghat for the evening Narmada Aarti.

Ekatmata Dham

The 108-foot bronze Statue of Oneness of Adi Shankaracharya on Mandhata Hill, opened in 2023, with a museum and a ticketed light show. Shankaracharya is said to have met his guru Govindapada here, which is why the town claims him. Allow an hour; entry ticket at the site.

How to Reach

  • Air: Indore, 77 km, about 2 hours by taxi (₹2,000–₹2,500 one way). Direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Hyderabad.
  • Rail: Omkareshwar Road (Mortakka), 12 km, on the Indore–Khandwa line; few trains. Indore or Khandwa Junction are the practical options, then bus or taxi.
  • Road: Indore 77 km; Ujjain 140 km (3 hours) — the Mahakaleshwar–Omkareshwar pair is the standard two-Jyotirlinga trip; Khandwa 75 km. MP Roadways buses from Indore every hour.

For the Ujjain half see our Mahakaleshwar Bhasma Aarti guide.

Where to Stay

Trust dharamshalas and dormitories on both banks are the cheapest and closest; the town has budget lodges and a few mid-range hotels on the Indore road. MP Tourism runs a property near the temple. Indore is the comfortable base if you’re day-tripping.

Best Time to Visit

October to March. Monsoon (July–September) raises the Narmada and suspends boats; Shravan crowds coincide. Mahashivratri and every Shravan Monday are the peaks; Kartik Purnima brings the Narmada Mahotsav.
