Vaishno Devi Yatra Guide 2026: RFID Registration, the 12 km Track, Helicopter Booking, Darshan and Costs

Vaishno Devi is a 12 km uphill walk from Katra to a cave in the Trikuta hills, and about 90 lakh people do it every year. The Shrine Board runs it like an airport — mandatory registration, RFID tracking, timed helicopter slots, fixed pony rates. That system is what makes a family trip possible, but it also means that arriving without knowing the rules costs you a day. Here is the whole yatra, in the order it happens.

Step 1: Registration and the RFID Card

Every pilgrim needs a free RFID Yatra card before starting the climb. No card, no entry to the track.

• Register online at maavaishnodevi.org (or the Shrine Board app) — free, needs a photo ID for each person. Slots are date-specific.
• Collect the physical RFID card at the Katra counters (Yatra Registration Counter near the bus stand, Niharika complex, or the railway station counter) by showing the registration and ID.
• You must start the yatra within 12 hours of receiving the card and return to Katra within 24 hours. Cards expire otherwise.
• The card is scanned at Banganga, Adhkuwari, Sanjichhat and Bhawan, and returned at the end.

Online registration is closed on peak days when the daily quota is full; on those days the counters issue nothing either. Register before you leave home.

Step 2: Katra to Bhawan — the Track

The path is paved and lit the whole way, with water, toilets, food stalls and medical posts every kilometre or so. Two routes run from Adhkuwari: the old track (steeper, via Sanjichhat) and the newer Himkoti track (longer, gentler, better views). Take Himkoti up and the old track down if you’re walking both ways.

Time: 4–6 hours up walking at a family pace; 3–4 down. Most people start at night or before dawn to avoid the heat and reach Bhawan for the morning aarti.

Helicopter booking: only on maavaishnodevi.org, opens 60 days ahead, sells out within minutes for weekends and school holidays. Each ticket needs the passenger’s ID; names are checked at boarding. Report 1 hour before. Flights stop in fog, rain and high wind — always have a plan B. Agencies advertising helicopter “packages” are reselling these same tickets at a markup or bundling hotels; the Shrine Board doesn’t sell VIP darshan with any helicopter ticket.

Step 4: Darshan at Bhawan

The shrine is a natural cave with three rock pindis — Mahakali, Mahalakshmi, Mahasaraswati. Darshan is free and runs around the clock, pausing only for the two aartis.

Aarti tickets (about ₹100) let you watch from inside; book at Bhawan or online. The queue for darshan on a normal weekday is 30–90 minutes; on Navratri, weekends and holidays, several hours.

Rules: no phones, cameras, belts, leather, bags. Free cloakroom at Bhawan (queues on peak days — lockers at Sanjichhat are faster if you’re flying). Prasad counters are at the exit. A separate queue exists for seniors and the differently-abled.

Step 5: Bhairon Nath

The yatra is considered incomplete without Bhairon Nath, 2.5 km above Bhawan. Walk (steep, 45 minutes) or take the ropeway from behind Bhawan. It’s usually quick; go straight after darshan.

Where to Stay

Shrine Board accommodation — Niharika, Vaishnavi Dham, Shakti Bhawan, Kalika Dham in Katra; Adhkuwari and Sanjichhat mid-way; Bhawan has dormitories and rooms. Cheap, clean, bookable on maavaishnodevi.org. Rooms at Bhawan let you do darshan at night and rest.

Katra hotels — every price range; the bus stand and Shalimar road areas are walkable to the track. Katra rates double on Navratri.

How to Reach Katra

• Air: Jammu Airport, 50 km, 1.5 hours by taxi.
• Rail: Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra station — direct trains from Delhi (Vande Bharat about 8 hours), Mumbai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Chennai. The Chenab bridge line north to Srinagar opened in 2025, so Katra is now a through station.
• Road: Jammu 50 km; Delhi 650 km via the Delhi–Katra expressway route, 10–12 hours.

Best Time to Visit

March–April and September–November for weather. Navratri (twice a year) is the biggest period — beautiful, but registration quotas fill weeks ahead. Summer (May–June) is crowded with school holidays; monsoon (July–August) brings landslides and helicopter cancellations; winter (December–February) is cold with occasional snow at Bhawan but the quietest darshan of the year.

Suggested Two-Day Plan

Day 1: Reach Katra by afternoon, collect the RFID card, rest. Start the walk at 10 PM.

Day 2: Bhawan by 3–4 AM, morning aarti, darshan, Bhairon Nath by ropeway, walk or pony down by noon, Katra by 3 PM.

With helicopter: fly 7 AM, Bhawan by 8:30, darshan, Bhairon, back to Sanjichhat for the noon flight.
