Meenakshi Amman Temple Timings 2026: Darshan Hours, ₹50 and ₹100 Special Darshan, Dress Code, Night Ceremony and a Route Through the Complex

Last verified: September 2026. The temple is administered by Tamil Nadu’s HR&CE department; timings extend during Chithirai and Navaratri, and ticket rates are revised from time to time. Confirm at the counters.

Meenakshi Amman is a temple where the goddess comes first — her shrine is bigger, her queue is longer, and the whole complex is built around her marriage to Sundareswarar, re-enacted every night when his image is carried to her chamber. Fourteen gopurams, a thousand-pillar hall, a tank you walk around before darshan: it’s less a temple than a walled town, and a first visit without a plan means missing half of it. This guide gives the timings, the ticket tiers, and a route through the complex.

Rules Inside

  • Dress code, enforced: dhoti or trousers with shirt for men; saree, half-saree or salwar with dupatta for women. Jeans, shorts, sleeveless, leggings and skirts are turned away at the gate.
  • No phones, cameras or bags inside; deposit counters at every gate (₹10–₹20).
  • Footwear at the stands outside.
  • Non-Hindus may enter the complex and see the corridors, mandapams, tank and Thousand Pillar Hall, but not the two main sanctums.
  • Wheelchairs and battery cars for seniors on request at the east gate.

A Route Through the Complex

  1. Enter by the east gopuram (Ashta Shakti Mandapam, with the eight goddesses and the story of Meenakshi in paintings).
  2. Walk the Pottramarai Kulam — the Golden Lotus Tank — once round; the north side paintings tell the temple’s origin.
  3. Meenakshi shrine first (the longer queue).
  4. Sundareswarar shrine, past the huge Nataraja in silver, dancing on his right foot.
  5. Thousand Pillar Hall — 985 carved pillars and the sculpture museum; the musical pillars are at the far end.
  6. Out through the south gopuram, the tallest (about 52 metres), and look back.

Allow 2–3 hours without queues; a morning on a weekday does it comfortably.

Festivals

  • Chithirai Festival (April–May) — the celestial wedding and Kallazhagar’s entry into the Vaigai; the year’s biggest, ten days, lakhs of people.
  • Navaratri (September–October) — the golu displays inside.
  • Aavani Moolam (August–September), Float Festival / Teppam (January–February) at the Mariamman Teppakulam.
  • Every Friday is busy for the goddess.

Around the Temple

  • Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal (2 km) — the Nayak palace; sound-and-light show in the evening.
  • Koodal Azhagar Temple — Vishnu, walking distance.
  • Thiruparankundram (8 km) — Murugan’s rock-cut temple, one of the six abodes.
  • Alagar Kovil (20 km) and Pazhamudircholai.
  • Gandhi Memorial Museum.

How to Reach

  • Air: Madurai Airport, 12 km. Flights from Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, and Colombo.
  • Rail: Madurai Junction, 1.5 km from the temple; on the Chennai–Kanyakumari line, with trains from across the south and from Delhi and Mumbai.
  • Road: Chennai 460 km, Trichy 135 km, Rameshwaram 170 km, Kanyakumari 245 km. Buses from Mattuthavani (8 km) and Periyar bus stands.

Where to Stay

The streets around the temple (Town Hall Road, West Masi Street) have budget and mid-range hotels within walking distance; rooftop restaurants there look straight at the gopurams. Larger hotels are near the railway station and along the bypass. Book early for Chithirai.

Best Time to Visit

October to March. Madurai is hot the rest of the year; April–May is Chithirai crowds in 40°C heat. Weekday mornings are calmest; Fridays and Sundays are heavy.
