Kanyakumari Bhagavathy Amman Temple Timings 2026: Darshan Hours, Rules, Vivekananda Rock Ferry and What to See
Last verified: September 2026. Ferry fares and memorial hours are set by Tamil Nadu’s Poompuhar Shipping Corporation and change occasionally — check at the terminal.
Kanyakumari is where three seas meet and where the day both begins and ends in the water. The Bhagavathy Amman temple sits right on that tip, and most people combine it with the Vivekananda Rock ferry, the Thiruvalluvar statue and a sunrise or sunset. Here’s how the timings fit together so you can do all of it in a day without missing a boat or a closed sanctum.
Bhagavathy Amman Temple Timings
| Session | Time |
|---|---|
| Morning | 4:30 AM – 12:30 PM |
| Closed | 12:30 PM – 4:00 PM |
| Evening | 4:00 PM – 8:30 PM |
Entry is free. Queues are short outside festival days; 20–40 minutes at most. The goddess is worshipped as Kanya (the virgin) Devi, a form of Parvati, and the diamond nose-stud is the famous detail — the story goes that its glow once misled ships, so the eastern door is kept shut.
Best window: 5:00–6:30 AM, then straight to the seafront for sunrise.
Rules Inside
- Men must remove their shirts to enter the sanctum. This is enforced. Dhoti or trousers are fine below.
- Women: saree, salwar-kameez or long skirt; no shorts.
- No phones or cameras inside; cloakroom at the entrance.
- Footwear off at the gate.
- Non-Hindus are allowed in the outer temple; the inner sanctum is restricted.
Vivekananda Rock Memorial and Thiruvalluvar Statue
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Memorial hours | 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM |
| Ferry | Poompuhar ferry from the terminal near the temple, every 15–20 minutes; last boat back around 4:00 PM |
| Ferry fare | ₹50–₹75 per person return (regular); a higher-priced “special” ticket skips the queue |
| Memorial entry | Small fee at the rock |
The rock is where Vivekananda meditated in December 1892 before going to Chicago. There is a meditation hall (Dhyana Mandapam) — silent, worth 15 minutes. The Thiruvalluvar statue (133 ft) is on the adjacent rock and the ferry stops there too. The queue for the ferry on weekends and holidays can run an hour; go at 8 AM sharp or after 2 PM. The service is suspended in rough seas, common in June–August.
Sunrise and Sunset
Sunrise: from the seafront promenade beside the temple, or from your hotel rooftop if it faces east. Around 6:00–6:30 AM; the rocks and statue are silhouetted.
Sunset: from Sunset Point / Gandhi Mandapam side, around 6:00–6:30 PM. On full-moon evenings in April (Chitra Pournami) you can see the sunset and moonrise at the same time from the same spot — the town’s most famous moment.
Nearby
- Gandhi Mandapam (on the seafront) — where his ashes were kept before immersion; on 2 October the sun falls exactly on that spot through a roof opening. Free, 7 AM–7 PM.
- Suchindram Thanumalayan Temple (13 km) — Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma in one linga; a spectacular gopuram and musical pillars. 4:30–11:30 AM, 5–8:30 PM.
- Padmanabhapuram Palace (35 km) — the old Travancore capital, wooden palace; closed Mondays.
- Kanyakumari beach and Triveni Sangam — the sea is rough; wading only.
How to Reach
- Air: Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), 90 km, 2.5 hours. Madurai 245 km.
- Rail: Kanyakumari station is the end of the line; direct trains from Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Thiruvananthapuram. Nagercoil (20 km) has more services.
- Road: Trivandrum 90 km via NH66; frequent TNSTC and KSRTC buses.
Where to Stay
Sea-facing hotels along the promenade and Beach Road for the sunrise from your room; TTDC’s Hotel Tamil Nadu near the lighthouse is the reliable government option. Book ahead for December–January and the Chitra Pournami weekend.
Best Time to Visit
October to March — clear skies for sunrise and sunset and calm seas for the ferry. Avoid June–August if the rock matters to you; ferries cancel often. Navaratri (September/October) is the temple’s big festival.
