I will never forget that instant when I saw Kedarnath Temple towering behind a snow-covered Himalayan mountain peak – it was at 4:47 am when there was nothing but complete darkness, and it was terribly cold outside. My hands were stiff from the cold, and my legs felt heavy due to the exhausting 16 kilometers I had just covered the previous day. Yet as soon as I heard the temple bells ringing amid the silence of the valley and watched the first sparks of Nirvan Aarti being lit inside, the fatigue instantly disappeared.

If you are thinking of visiting Kedarnath in 2026, one of the first things you will have to get clear is the proper Kedarnath Temple timings. The slightest mistake while figuring out how long you should be waiting before going to see Kedarnath can make you lose precious hours of time. Just like what happened to me, but now I know everything there is to know about Kedarnath Temple Darshan.

Here is a complete, honest, and practical breakdown of Kedarnath Temple timings, Darshan details, and the Aarti schedule.

When Does Kedarnath Temple Open Every Year?

Kedarnath Temple is not operational for the whole year. Being a seasonal temple, it operates only during summers when it becomes easy and feasible to reach due to the altitude and weather conditions.

Opening Date (2026): The temple is likely to be open on 2nd May 2026, on the day of Akshaya Tritiya. The precise date will be declared annually by Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC), post Shivratri puja at Ukhimath – the abode of the deity during winters.

Closing Date (2026): It is customary for the temple to close down on Bhai Dooj in November – which will fall on 29th October 2026 this time. After closing the temple, an idol of Lord Kedarnath is brought to Ukhimath in Rudraprayag District and worshipped until winters.

This six-month period starting from May till November is considered a pilgrimage to visit Kedarnath Temple and devotees must plan their trip during this time only.

Daily Timings of Kedarnath Temple

It adheres to an established set of rituals which have existed for many years. The priests of this temple perform their rituals according to the practices which were practiced way before India came into existence as we know it today.
Given below are the detailed daily timings of the Kedarnath temple:

Opening Time — 4:00 AM

This temple starts its operations at 4:00 AM every morning. This timing is definitely not suitable for tourists; however, for devotees of the Himalayas temples, it is ideal. The first of the rituals performed in the morning at the temple involves bathing and ornamenting the Shivalinga after which comes the Nirvan Aarti.

Nirvan Aarti (Mangal Aarti) — 4:00 AM to 4:30 AM

It is considered the most spiritual Aarti of the entire day at Kedarnath. The Shivalinga at this temple is bathed using milk, curd, ghee, honey, and water taken from the Mandakini river. Next, the priests adorn the Jyotirlinga with new flowers and bhasma. This Aarti is considered extremely spiritual, hence very few pilgrims are able to experience it as it occurs very early in the morning and requires pre-registration.

General Darshan – 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM

After the conclusion of the Nirvan Aarti, and after all the different Abhishek ceremonies during the morning session, the temple gates open up for General Darshan, from where pilgrims get a glimpse of the Shivalinga. This goes on till 8:00 PM during the night.

Mid-Day Rest Period – 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM

During the day, the temple remains closed for some time due to the daily rituals and rest time. If there is heavy pilgrim traffic during peak times (from May to July), then the duration of the rest period may change. Plan your visit accordingly so that you do not find yourself outside the temple during the midday break between 3 PM and 5 PM.

Evening Aarti – 7:30 PM to 8:30 PM

This ceremony is known as the Shringaar Aarti, or also the Evening Aarti. During this ceremony, the Shivalinga is beautified with flowers, and the prayers are offered with high regard for rituals. In comparison to the morning prayer ceremony, it is relatively easy to attend the evening Aarti.

Different Types of Darshan in Kedarnath

All the darshans offered in Kedarnath are not alike. Based on the duration you have available, your budget, and spiritual needs, there are options to choose from:

1. Regular Darshan (free) : It is the traditional line-up style of darshan open to everyone without any additional cost. At the time of peak season, the line-up could take anything between 3 to 5 hours. Try to reach early, preferably before 7:00 AM when the gates open, to escape the hustle.

2. VIP/Special Darshan (paid) : BKTC provides a special Darshan ticket that gives you access to the temple through a fast lane. In 2025, the price stood at around ₹300 for each pilgrim. The prices might vary for 2026, and therefore, it is advised to check the official BKTC website. If you are traveling with elderly relatives and kids who find it difficult to queue up for long periods, then this option works best for you.

3. Rudrabhishek & Laghurudra Puja

For a more personalized and immersive experience, you can also book a Rudrabhishek which will involve having a puja performed for you personally by the temple priests using holy things such as milk, honey, ghee, Ganga jal and bel patra on the Shivalinga in your name. Bookings have to be made at the BKTC website. Prices will differ based on the kind of puja – normal Abhishek will start from ₹1,500 but Laghurudra/Atirudra pujas will be very expensive.

I personally had a Rudrabhishek done when I visited and it is a whole new experience compared to regular Darshan. It involves you entering into the sanctum sanctorum and even touching the Shivalinga yourself – an experience that I highly recommend to all sincere devotees who make this long journey.

Aarti Timings at Kedarnath Temple: Everything You Need to Know

There are basically three main aartis which are held at the Kedarnath Temple each day:

1. Nirvan Aarti (Mangal Aarti) – 4:00 a.m.
It is an awakening ritual. The god or goddess is awakened through prayers, worship, and lamps. The crowd is relatively small and the ambiance is very meditative.
2. Bhog Aarti – 12 p.m.
A shorter ritual after the morning pujas. It is when bhog or food is offered to the god.
3. Shringaar Aarti (Sandhya Aarti) – 7:30 p.m.
The most spectacular Aarti in the day. The whole temple premises is illuminated, incense smoke ascends into the chilly night air amidst chants while the mountains echo.

Useful Tips by an Experienced Person

Pre-register before visiting :  It is essential that you get your registration done for the pilgrimage of Kedarnath Yatra before you go there. You cannot just come to Gaurikund and walk straight to the temple.

Pack warmly even in the month of May :  Even if it is a sunny day, it is still going to be very cold around the temple premises in the early mornings and late evenings. It would help if you had thermal clothing, a heavy windproof jacket, gloves, and woolen socks.

Try reaching the temple the day before so you have time to do everything :  By doing so, you will be able to attend the Aarti in the evenings as well as Mangal Aarti in the morning. Most people who try the day trip from Gaurikund come back very tired after failing to make good use of their timing. Take water and dry snacks. Queue hours are very long during the peak season.

Have patience and presence of mind :  Kedarnath Temple is not an attraction for tourists. This is an active temple which has been here for the past 1,200 years. All these elements like the hustle and bustle of queuing, the cold and the high altitude – all this contributes to your experience. Accept it.

Conclusion

The Kedarnath Temple doesn’t favour those who come unprepared. It favours the prepared ones. Being familiar with timings and knowing how to manage your Aarti can help you have a pleasant experience for life.

No matter what takes you to the Kedarnath Temple – whether it be faith or a sense of adventure or simply to feel a part of something ancient and majestic, go there with an open mind and go prepared.
Har Har Mahadev.
