There is something unique about reaching Khatu before dawn, and no tour guide can ever warn you about it.
After the autorickshaw ride from Ringas, you find yourself at the entrance to Toran gate when the sun has yet to rise. There are scents of marigold flowers and burning incense in the air. Some speaker plays a bhajan in such a low volume that one feels the town is singing to itself. You follow the crowd of people who have come here with their families, some even carrying their little kids and holding their old grandfathers by the hands, while others are couples using mobile phones to capture the whole scene.
Khatu Shyam Mandir is my fourth visit thus far. My initial trip to this holy place occurred almost spontaneously – as part of a tour from Delhi to Jaipur that a friend had insisted we undertake. At the time, I was not a religious person by any means; the decision to go to this holy place occurred due to nothing more than curiosity – as one might visit somewhere solely because it looked pretty. After being there for three hours, I felt somehow uplifted by a power beyond my comprehension. Khatu Shyam can do things for someone that defy explanation.
This guide will provide information to those who may be making their own trip to Khatu Shyam Mandir; perhaps it is your first time or perhaps it is your fifteenth trip. Everything contained within this guide is very tangible – opening times, aarti timings, days to avoid, and days you cannot afford to miss. Khatu Shyam Ji – The Story You Need to Know Before You Visit
The name comes before the story. So, even before I give you details about timing and logistics, here is the story behind Khatu Shyam Ji, as the story makes your darshan experience unique.
According to belief, Khatu Shyam Ji is none other than Barbarik, the grandson of Bhima of the famous Pandavas. Barbarik was a highly skilled warrior. He had three arrows, the possession of which gave him the power to singlehandedly change the course of the Mahabharata battle.
Krishna knew about the deadly consequences of this oath, so he went to meet Barbarik in disguise and demanded his head as charity. Barbarik readily accepted this demand but made one condition that he should have the privilege to witness the entire fight from above. His wish was fulfilled by Krishna, and he was blessed by him to become worshipped all over the world in the name of Shyam during Kali Yuga, Khatu Shyam Mandir Timing.
This very head, which was later on known as Sheesh, is worshiped at Khatu Shyam Temple. Here there is not any idol present; only the decorated head of Barbarik is worshipped everyday after adorning it with flowers, jewellery, and new clothes, and watching over the large number of devotees standing in queue just to get their eyes fall on him.
“Haar ke jeetne wale ko Baba Shyam kehte hain” — They call Baba Shyam the one who wins even after losing. It is one of the most powerful things ever said about faith.

The timings of the temple vary according to the seasons, i.e., summer timings from April to September and winter timings from October to March. Moreover, there was an important announcement made in May 2024 which most visitors do not know about yet.

Starting from 27th May 2024, the temple will be closed from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM from Monday to Friday.
The closure time mentioned above will not be applicable on Saturday, Sunday, Ekadashi, Dwadashi of Shukla Paksha, and Public Holidays.
On the mentioned open dates, the temple operates in its regular schedule, which is all day round (24×7).

Khatu Shyam Ji Aarti Time — Timing of All Five Artis
Five artis are conducted on a daily basis at Khatu Shyam Mandir, and each of them is held during a specific time in Baba’s schedule for the day. Try to time your trip such that you are able to witness at least one of them, and if you get a chance to see the evening Shringaar Aarti, you won’t regret a bit.

Mangala Aarti (4:30 AM) – This is best attended if you can wake up this early, as it’s the time of greatest spiritual power and intimacy. No crowds at all. - Sandhya Aarti (7:30 PM) – This is visually most amazing. All the lights will be lit here, and bhajans will reverberate off marble walls. Come at least by 7:00 PM.
- If you are a new visitor, then the Shringar Aarti (7:00 AM) is the one to attend as Baba appears the most handsome at this time.
How the Darshan Really Feels : Khatu Shyam Mandir Timing
My first experience with the darshan at Khatu Shyam was not at all serene. I am going to be brutally honest here.
It was a Sunday in the month of February, mid-season Falgun Mela, and what seemed to be a short queue turned into a wait of more than two hours in the cold. As I made my way through the winding line, I began to wonder why exactly I made the decisions leading up to my presence in the temple’s inner court.
And then I saw him.
The beautifully adorned sheesh of Baba Shyam, surrounded by flowers and lights. Priests singing hymns, bells ringing, and one woman sobbing softly beside me while pressing her hands together, hard enough to turn her knuckles white. And an old man who had probably walked for miles suddenly just stopped.
However, it takes about four seconds before you are moved by the line. Four seconds at Khatu Shyam Mandir seem like more than hours spent outside of it.
When I went there for the second time, I was aware of when to get there, which was at 5:30 AM on Tuesday. I reached the front within fifteen minutes. This is the actual insider information that one would never read in any travel guide. Tuesdays early morning are among the most peaceful days in a week at Khatu Shyam.

The 16 Darshan Lines – How to Pick the Best Line to Khatu Shyam Mandir Timing
The temple now has an organized 16-line darshan arrangement to cater to the massive influx of pilgrims, particularly in the peak season when the temple sees more than one lakh visitors daily.
INFO The Line System Explained
- Line 1 – Designated for senior citizens, physically challenged devotees, and pilgrims who require special care. Pre-booking online at shrishyammandir.com is mandatory.
- Lines 2-16 – General darshan lines available for all devotees. First come, first served basis. Booking not necessary.
There are 16 parallel lines that culminate in front of the sanctum. The pace differs depending on the time; middle lines (5-10) generally proceed quicker than the rest on crowded days. - The carrying of flowers, garlands, perfumes, and prasad inside the temple is strictly PROHIBITED from 2023 onwards. All offerings have to be made outside the temple precincts.
One tip that would have been useful to know on my first visit is to check whether the queue of general darshan lines is too crowded before joining the queue. It is always shorter to take the last two lines, Line 14 or 15, than the first line, Line 2, as most people immediately opt for the first lines.
Special Days – Days That Make Khatu Shyam Unique
There are special days when visiting Khatu Shyam Mandir Timing becomes an out-of-the-ordinary pilgrimage. In case you can time your visit around any of those days, you’ll get to enjoy an entirely unique experience.
Ekadashi & Dwadashi – The Most Holy Days
Days 11th and 12th of every lunar fortnight (Gyaras and Baras) are said to be the best days for visiting Khatu Shyam temple. Devotees can spend the whole day and night here, with darshan on Ekadashi being multiplied by tenfold. Once, I’ve been to Khatu Shyam Temple on Jyeshtha Shukla Ekadashi; it was a pure coincidence, as I didn’t even plan it. However, it was one of my best experiences, as during those 2 AM, Khatu Shyam Temple was much more active than most temples usually do at noon.
Phalgun Mela – The Annual Big Festival
The 12-day long Phalgun Mela, celebrated during the month of Phalgun (February-March), is the most important event of the year at Khatu Shyam Ji. Hundreds of thousands devotees come from all over India to participate in this grand festival. Some people even trek from the town of Ringas to Khatu, which is 17 km away from here, by foot and without shoes, carrying Nishan (triangular flag of Shyam).
If this is your first visit to this place, you will want to feel its energy fully; go there for Phalgun Mela. If you would like to have a serene darshan experience, better skip this fair and visit in September-October. Both experiences are worth your effort but are absolutely opposite.
Other Important Festivals
Besides the festivals discussed above, Janmashtami, Holi, Vasant Panchami, and Jhool Jhulani Ekadashi are also celebrated at this shrine. The temple remains closed for around 12–24 hours on some of these occasions especially when there is a special ritual called Tilak Darshan of Baba. These dates are announced on their letterheads and website.
How to Get to Khatu Shyam Mandir

From Delhi (275 km)
The most convenient way is Delhi → Jaipur National Highway → Shahpura → Ringas → Khatu. By car, the journey will take 4.5 to 5.5 hours. From Delhi, there are regular bus services from ISBT Kashmiri Gate to Ringas; from there one can easily get local jeeps or autos to Khatu in intervals of a few minutes. Another popular mode of transport is the overnight trains from Delhi to Jaipur which reach very early in the morning and from there one can hire taxis/cab to Khatu.
From Jaipur (80 km)
One can easily travel by road from Jaipur to Ringas on NH52. The whole journey takes nearly an hour and a half by either RSRTC buses or by private cars. Alternatively, one can use the train service to Ringas Junction which is just 17 km from Khatu and can be reached within 20-25 minutes by local jeeps for just ₹30-50 per head.
Closest Airport
Jaipur International Airport (JAI) — around 95 km away. Cabs and taxis are easily accessible; cost of one-way travel by cab to Khatu is estimated at ₹1,500 to ₹2,200.
Closest Railway Station

Conclusion – The Message of Baba Khatu Shyam
The title of Baba Khatu Shyam is ‘the guardian of the poor and granter of all wishes.’ In essence, the legend of Baba Khatu Shyam involves an act of complete self-sacrifice – giving up everything for others without retaining anything for oneself. There seems to be something in this legend that people can draw immense comfort from, particularly during tough times. Perhaps, that explains why the temple is never deserted. On a Tuesday in July, at 4 AM, there would always be people who have journeyed miles to pray before this adorned skull and whisper their burdens. Most important thing is Khatu Shyam Mandir Timing, if you can reach exact time you will see some difference compare to odd timings.
I have witnessed a truck driver crying freely in the queue for darshan. I have seen a businessman in a perfectly tailored suit remove his shoes and join his palms with the total abandon that most people exhibit only in their most intimate settings. I have seen kids racing around the compound with their laughter while their grandmas light diyas with trembling fingers.
No matter what you believe in, no matter what you bring to the shrine when you reach Khatu Shyam — it has room for everything. That’s the beauty of this temple. It asks for nothing. Just come. The rest will be taken care of by Baba.
